Spotlight On: Viper 640 North American Championship

By Art Vasenius

Last week I got to be part of sailing history, as I had the pleasure of participating in the Viper 640 North American Championship. This sailing event was brought to the west coast for the first time in Viper 640 Class history. It was hosted by Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach, California and ran from September 3 through 7. The event was also a qualifier regatta for the EFG Viper Pan-American Championship. Over thirty sailboats with teams from seven US states, four teams from Canada, and two from Australia were featured.

While I did not sail my best, I was very impressed by and supportive of those sailing around me. Jeff Grange, Chris Parker, and Tedd White from Viper 149 Venom were the leaders three of the four days. The crew went from buying a boat in April to being on the podium in early September. Upon completion of day one, Grange held an eight-point lead over three-time North American champion Brad Boston of Sarnia Yacht Club in Ontario, Canada. Grange continued to hold on to the lead with 10 points after seven races, despite adding a six, five, and one to his four-bullet first day. Coming in behind Grange was Alamitos Bay’s Kevin Taugher who finished second with a total of 16 points.

This was a great event and is just the start of the ongoing support we plan to provide this class and boat.
