Our Top 5 Extreme Sailing Video Picks

Monday, April 14, 2014

One of the many reasons sailing can sometimes be described as extreme is because it’s done in hazardous conditions such as in hurricane weather. We’ve searched the web for eye-catching extreme sailing videos. Of the hundreds of videos we found, the following stood out the most to us.

1. Eye of the Storm – Hurricane Ivan

A group of sailors hit the water in 2004 in the wake of Hurricane Ivan. This video highlights their journey. A terrifying ride, their sailboat crashed.

2. Extreme Catamaran Sailing

This video captures an F18 catamaran boat sailing Archipelago Raid, an extreme race of 100,000 islands. The helmsman and crew sailed in the Baltic Sea.

3. Extreme Sailing Competition in Muscat

Highlights from the Extreme Sailing Competition in Muscat just last month. It was a close race! The winds were smooth and the seas were perfect.

4. Climbing the Mast

In the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, Tom Way climbed the mast and out on the spinnaker pole. This video features footage from his venture.

5. Sailing the BT Challenge

If you love sailing as much as we do, this video will surely get your heat pumping. While the clarity of the video could be better, this video offers some stunning footage from the BT Challenge 2000/01.

2014 ISAF Sailing World Cup Mallorca Preview

Thursday, April 03, 2014
2014 ISAF Sailing World Cup

From March 31 to April 5, 160 Lasers will be competing off the coast of Mallorca, Spain in the fourth of five regattas in the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Cup season. 55 different countries will be represented by 882 sailors in 11 different events, including one Paralympic race, in this year’s regatta.

In last year’s regatta, Australian racer Tom Burton was leading going into the final race, but was unable to hold off the storming Andy Maloney of New Zealand, who snatched the win away from Burton. Maloney has taken time off since the 2013 Laser World Championships in Oman and Burton, the number-two ranked racer in the word and Croatia’s Tonci Stipanovic, the number one in the world, have taken advantage of this by racking up wins at other ISAF Sailing World Cup events held in Qingdao, China, Melbourne and Miami.

Even after taking time off, Maloney sees himself as still one of the top racers in the ISAF Sailing World Cup.

“I am always confident that I can win any event going into it. I feel very prepared after three months training in New Zealand focusing on key areas to improve and am excited to line up against the other top guys again,” Maloney said in an interview with Sail-World.com, adding, 'There are definitely a few sailors who were very consistent last year and set the bar towards the end of the season. It was an interesting year for myself with a lot of different events going on, making it really busy and long. I'm feeling totally refreshed after the summer in New Zealand and feel I can start off 2014 as I did last year.”

Other top racers that will be competing at Mallorca include Women’s Laser Radial racers ISAF Sailing World Cup Qingdao winner Dongshuang Zhang of China, Melbourne champion Tatiana Drozdovskaya of Belarus and American Paige Railey, who won the World Cup race in Miami will be joined by 2013’s Laser Radial World Champion Tina Mihelic of Croatia as well as Great Britain’s Alison Young, who returns to defend her title at Mallorca.

The Men’s 470 race will see the continuation of the battle in Miami between the Australian duo of Mat Belcher and Will Ryan and France’s Sofian Bouvet and Jeremie Mion, currently ranked number three in the world. There will be 80 boats competing in the race and Mion is ready for the wide-open battle.

“There are a lot of boats who can be really good there and we know that everybody will be very close. It's going to be a good fight,” Mion said to Sail-World.com.

In the Women’s 470, 49 boats will be competing in Mallorca, including world number one Sophie Weguelin and Eilidh McIntyre of Great Britain, New Zealand’s Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie, last year’s ISAF Rolex World Sailors of the Year and the number three pair in the world, Anne Haeger and Briana Provancha of the U.S.

The 99-boat Finn race will be headlined by the battle brewing between Aussie racer Oliver Tweddell and Miami winner Giles Scott of Great Britain, who trailed Tweddell going into the last race of the event but pulled off the multi-boat length win off in the end. Also participating in the Finn event is 2013 World Champion Jorge Zarif of Brazil and French racer Jonathan Lobert, who was a bronze medalist at London 2012.

The first day of the regatta is on Monday the 31st and for more info, check out the both the Event website as well as SWC website.

2014 Extreme Sailing Series: Singapore

2014 Extreme Sailing Series: Singapore2014 Extreme Sailing Series: Singapore
"The beauty of Singapore’s magnificent skyline was the backdrop for the first stop in the 2014 Extreme Sailing Series." Photo source: www.extremesailingseries.com

The first venue for The 2014 Extreme Sailing Series featured 12 boats this year, up from 8 a year ago. This weekend-long race challenged 60 of the best sailors in the world in stadium style sailing with roughly 15,000 people in attendance. The race coordinator changed the date of the competition up from April to February just to ensure the monsoon season quality winds would be present.

The combination of more boats in the water and stronger winds made for spectacular, close-quarters racing. Dean Barker, skipper of Emirates Team New Zealand, said, "…the competition is very very strong, it’s some very good teams, and a really difficult venue to kick it all off." Dean would be correct seeing the clash of spectacular racing teams in wildly, chaotic conditions.

With the addition of new teams campaigning this year, there is bound to be some adjustment period. Ben Ainslie, skipper of the J.P. Morgan BAR team, said, "We’re a completely new crew. Some of us have sailed on this series a bit, some quite a lot, and others not at all. We have to learn how to sail with one another; we’ve got to learn about each boat and this race-course. It’s a huge amount to take onboard in a very short period of time." Ben had no idea how right he was about to become.

2014 Extreme Sailing Series: Team Aberdeen Singapore Lands atop Groupama Sailing Team
"Team Aberdeen Singapore lands atop Groupama sailing team after succumbing to the vicious combination of high winds and tight maneuvering." Photo source: www.extremesailingseries.com

This kind of rapid fire maneuvering obviously took its toll on many of the racers as there were many near-capsizing moments and a couple serious crashes. There was a jarring crash between Oman Air and Realstone on day 2 knocking out Realstone for the day.

But the biggest crash in 8 years came during race 20, a piggyback crash between Team Aberdeen Singapore and Groupama sailing team left Aberdeen on top of Groupama and many sailors in the drink.

Franck Cammas, skipper for Groupama, explained, "Everybody’s ok so it’s a good point. There is only technical damage on the boats. I’m sure it’s a bad moment for us. It’s important for us to come back and honor our job, I think. This kind of race is very risky, and sometime the risk is too much."

Morgan Larsen’s Alinghi took first, The Wave, Muscat took second, and Jerome Clerk’s Realstone took third.

Next up from the exciting world of Extreme Sailing Series: Act 2 from Muscat, Oman.

Velocitek Shift Review

Tuesday, December 10, 2013
Velocitek Shift

The Velocitek Shift is a state-of-the-art sailing compass that uses gyroscopes (a device consisting of a wheel) and magnetic sensors to help users track the orientation of their boat in three dimensions. As noted by Velocitek’s Chief Marketing Officer, Charles Swanson in the below video, when you use this device prior to a race, you won’t need to memorize or record reference angles. Just simply push a dedicated button to store a reference angle.

What Users Had to Say

Here’s what two professional sailors had to say about this piece of sailing gear, as illustrated in a Velocitek video.

“It accelerates a new course change faster than our tactic compasses and it also is a much stable average.” – Bora Gulari, 2x Moth World Champion

“It was very simple for me to go upwind before the start, hit the number, and the set button. … Once the race started I immediately knew if I was lifted or headed. Just the fact that I could look and see the heather lifted number didn’t make me think too much and I was able to focus my efforts elsewhere.” – Anthony Kotoun, Moth North American Champion

Ronstan Clear Start Sailing Watch 4050 Review

Friday, December 06, 2013
Ronstan 4050 Watch

Arguably, the Ronstan Clear Start Sailing Watch 4030 is the best sailing watch in the world. Well, that watch just got better with this Ronstan Clear Start Sailing Watch 4050. It has a fresh new look with large buttons, displays that are easy to read, and an advanced intuitive programming that was designed with the racing sailor in mind.

Not to mention, some of the world’s top sailors gave their input on this Clear Start™ watch. We love everything about it from its race sequence resynchronization, to its pre-programed race sequence sounds, and its bold and functional styling.

Product Feedback

We checked in with some of our customers who purchased this sailing watch to see what they thought of it. Many sang its praises and agree that it’s in a class of it’s own. One customer went as far as saying that this watch is hands down the best piece of catamaran equipment he owns.

This is a great watch, indeed. Order it and see for yourself.

Why We’re Thankful for Sailing

Wednesday, November 27, 2013

Why We're Thankful for Sailing

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we’ve been doing some reflecting on what we’re thankful for. One thing in particular is sailing. We’ve put together some of the reasons why we’re thankful for this sport and hobby and how sailing has touched us and our friends and families throughout the years.

  1. Freedom. One of our employees said sailing makes them feel free. When they are out on the water and the wind is blowing in their hair, they feel free and alive.
  2. Self-confidence. One of our employees who has a younger daughter who sails said sailing has taught her self-confidence. “I’ve made my fair share of mistakes when sailing but I was taught to keep going. As I get better and better, my self-confidence goes up.”
  3. It’s a great workout. Our owner spoke with one of his friends who sails and he said he’s thankful for sailing because it helps keep him healthy. He does dinghy sailing, which is a watersport.
  4. It’s fun! All of our employees who sail agree that sailing is fun and is a great hobby.
  5. New experiences. “Sailing opens my eyes to new and exciting experiences. I get to see new places and make memories,” said one of our customers.
  6. New friends. One of our owner’s relatives is in a sailing club. Through the sailing club, he has met a ton of new people and has made a lot of new friends. “I’m thankful for sailing because it introduced me to some pretty awesome people who I can call close friends.”
  7. For many of the above reasons and so many more, our owner is thankful for sailing because it allowed him to turn one of his passions into a business. When he’s not on the water, he gets to work with sailing clothing, sailing gear, sailboats, and more. “Opening up Sailing Pro Shop has been a dream come true,” he said.
  8. New skills. Many of the people we talked to said through sailing they gained new skills and improved some of their current skills such as leadership skills and communication skills.

Why are you thankful for sailing? Head over to our Facebook page and let us know. And, on behalf of all of us at Sailing Pro Shop - Happy Thanksgiving!

Gill Deck Tech Race Trainer Review | Sailing Shoes

Friday, November 08, 2013

Gill Deck Tech Race Trainer shoe

New to the sailing shoes market is the Gill Deck Tech Race Trainer shoe. It has an exclusive fill-contact and non-slip performance outsole for exceptional grip and traction in rain or shine. They are highly durable and non-absorbent. Plus, they dry quickly. In our opinion, these shoes are more durable than a lot of other sailing shoes in the market and they even have abrasion resistant toe protection that is in fact more durable than standard leather.

One of our employees has been using them since we got them in stock. Here’s what he had to say about them:

One of the first things I noticed when I took these shoes out of the box was design related. The reflective detailing caught my eye. When wearing them sailing, I felt sturdy in wet conditions. They have an excellent grip and they are even pretty comfortable. I would recommend these shoes for sailing.

5 Sailing Movies to Watch When You Can’t Sail

Friday, October 25, 2013

There are some days you simply can’t sail, such as on days when the weather is bad. When we can’t get out on the water for whatever reason, we love to indulge in a good movie about sailing. Here are some of our favorites to help you get your sailing fix when you can’t get it from sailing.

Wind
Starring Matthew Modine and Jennifer Grey

Genre: Action, Drama
Year Released: 1992

Anything that involves America’s Cup gets our attention, as this movie does. In it, a sailor and a lovely woman are brought together by their quest to claim the Cup. The shots of the boats in this movie are amazing, and the storyline is amusing too.

The Perfect Storm
Starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, and Diane Lane

Genre: Action, Drama, Adventure
Year Released: 2000

This one is a classic. You may have already even seen it due to its popularity when it came out, but it’s worth another watch. If you watch this movie when the weather is bad, it’ll make you glad you’re not on the water in a storm. This movie heavily focuses on weather.

Madison
Starring Jim Caviezel and Mary McCormack

Genre: Drama
Year Released: 2005

We love that this movie is based on a true story of a man who entered a Gold Cup Championship Race. It focuses on his personal struggle to victory. An inspirational movie for the whole family.

Morning Light
Starring Chris Branning and Kate Theisen

Year Released: 2008
Genre: Documentary

This movie follows the crew of 15 young competitors during six months of intense training. It highlights their determination and hard work training and competing in a big race. The crew is young (between ages 18 to 23). They compete against some of the world’s most experience sailors of that time.

Cast Away
Starring Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt

Year Released: 2000
Genre: Adventure, Drama

This movie focuses on one man’s quest to survive after being stranded on a deserted island due to a plane crash. It’s not sailing centric as the other movies but Tom Hanks, whose character is an award-winning sailor, makes this movie worth the watch.

Do you have a favorite sailing movie? Head over to our Facebook page and let us know what it is.
