this Friday, 30th May is the first iShares Cup Extreme 40 event in
Lugano, Switzerland and the BT Extreme 40, skippered by Nick Moloney,
is aiming for another overall podium place following their third place
overall in last year's series.
Moloney and the BT crew will
be competing in up to 15 races over three days and the racing will be
intense and even more competitive with a strong line-up of 10 teams
including two America's Cup team entries in the form of Alinghi and
last season's champions onboard Team Origin.
"This season is
going to be very exciting. There is a great fleet just raring to go and
the competition will be full on from the first start. We're not really
fearing anyone in particular - everyone is human and the better the
standard the more cherished the good results will be," said Nick. "It's
great the Cup guys are here competing and I have many good friends
amongst that world that are now in the fleet, and we're pretty
motivated as usual to beat our mates! The Extreme 40 class has taken a
big step up on the professional ladder and the results will be hard
fought for. Our overall objective for BT is a podium place for the
season once again."
The BT Extreme 40 team are already in Lugano,
located on the Swiss/Italian border, putting in some more training
pre-start: "Not a lot of wind today but believe it will get better as
week progresses. I've never been here before but it's a really
beautiful location. Very green, ritzy place for the beautiful people
driving sports cars! This week we will get a better idea as to the
amount of work ahead of us to achieve our overall objective."
about his crew, Nick commented: "We have a great team for the iShares
Cup programme, which is a relief after being faced with a complete
re-build after losing multihull legends Darren Bundock and Glenn Ashby
to the Olympic Games this year. The new team consists of the Tornado
team of Andrew Walsh and Ed Barney as well as Star class Olympian and
World Champion Steve Mitchell - with the added flip from last year that
now I am heavily outnumbered with three Brits and one Aussie onboard!
combination of Walsh and Barney is key based on the belief in it being
vital to have good catamaran experience onboard and these guys sail
cats all the time at the highest level. This week will be something
like their tenth regatta this year. Given that courses are so short it
is also vital that these two guys lean on knowing each other so well to
help make fast split decisions. 'Stevie' Mitchel is our powerhouse and
has great overall sailing experience and boat knowledge as a past world
champ - he also delivers some great jokes that can help the guys
de-stress sometimes! I guess I am a bit of a mediator bringing the
experience on handling the beast and overall strategy and onboard
We have an amazing team and we feel fortunate and excited about our plans and objectives."
finally on the importance of this first iShares Cup event of the five
scheduled this season: "As with all of these things the first few races
will be very important for our confidence. No doubt the learning curve
will be very steep for all of us but learning is a major source of my
