Teaching a child to sail will not only get them active this summer, but can teach them things that they will carry with them through life. In addition, sailing teaches self-confidence, gives them a sense of direction and offers them a sense of spatial awareness. The following five programs across the U.S. were designed with children in mind.

No one wants unsightly tan lines and with the Spinlock Deckvest, you won’t have to worry about a thing. Spinlock’s personal flotation devices (PFDs) are light and airy. Cumbersome life jackets are a thing of the past because these PFDs are compact and are shaped to fit the user’s body in a simple yet stylish shape. You will still be able to enjoy all your water activities and feel safe with these PFDs because not only do they have a pleasant fit and are compressed in size, but they are approved by the U.S. Coast Guard.
I personally use my Spinlock gear often. I have peace of mind knowing my PFD will be there for me.
But how do you know which personal flotation device is right for you? Here are a few tips to help make sure you purchase the right PFD for your body:
1. You will be sized by your chest and not your weight. Your PFD should fit snugly but give you enough breathing room so you can still move.
2. Make sure you have the correct buoyancy for your body. You can test the buoyancy while wearing your personal flotation device while in water and tilting your head back. Breath nice and easy and your chin should still be above the water. Basic rule of thumb is that if your mouth is not above the water, you need more buoyancy but remember it will be very different in different kinds of water. The fact is the more in shape and physically fit your body is, you will require more buoyancy.
3. Don’t forget those extra necessities you may need at a moment’s notice such as a knife or whistle so you may want to choose a PFD with tabs or pockets.
